The Evening Standard’s Theatre Awards

Last night (Sunday 25th November 2012) Danny Boyle and his creative team were awarded the ‘Beyond Theatre Award’ at The Evening Standard’s Theatre Awards.
The Olympic Opening Ceremony creative team consisted of artistic director Danny Boyle; designer Mark Tildesley; associate director Paulette Randall; writer Frank Cottrell Boyce; music director Rick Smith of Underworld; designer Suttirat Anne Larlarb; producer Tracey Seaward; movement director Toby Sedgwick; choreographer Temujin Gill; choreographer Kenrick Sandy; co- choreographer Sunanda Biswas; choreographer Akram Kahn; visual effects supervisor Adam Gascoyne; cauldron designer Thomas Heather-wick and video editor Sascha Dhillon.
Sarah Sands from the evening standard said “This award celebrates theatricality outside the confines of the auditorium. What else could possibly win but Danny Boyle¹s Olympic Opening Ceremony? The imagination, energy and sheer will of the evening became a metaphor for national hope. If we could achieve this, we could achieve anything. Apart from the spectacle and the most breathtaking scene change in stage history, Boyle managed to find a way of showing us who we are, as if he were poet laureate. He did all this on an austerity budget. He went beyond theatre but stayed within the limits of the Treasury.”
