Karl’s first UK solo art exhibition and Olympic update

Work continues at a frenetic pace on the Olympic opening ceremony, it feels like the thing that is dominating our lives here is the one thing we can’t really talk about – so here’s Danny talking a bit more about the show on Tuesday:

With around 6 weeks to go, Rick and the Underworld team are flat out dividing their time between the studio and various rehearsal sites. Full-scale production rehearsals with thousands of volunteers are already underway and from next week the Olympic Stadium becomes home.

It’s been quite a journey so far – one we hope to be able to tell more of once all is said and done, but for now, Mum’s the word and it’s back to that dark room (at least it’s keeping us out of the rain!).

In other news….we’re very excited to be able to announce that Karl’s first UK solo art exhibition will take place this summer. Previously shown at the La Foret Museum in Tokyo, What’s Going on in Your Head When You’re Dancing? will be presented at the Bernard Jacobson Gallery in London between 17th July and 10th August. Describing Karl’s work, the gallery says:

“Hyde’s large-scale paintings, diptych and triptychs, are entirely abstract gestural works, which have an affinity to both abstract expressionism and Japanese calligraphy. Painted on paper or packing cardboard with very large soft brushes and drawn into with charcoal and pastel, in some works one single gesture runs the length of the surface, in others marks combine into something more rhythmically complex. Hyde will often sit in front of the blank support, rehearsing the action he is about to take in his head before he begins the work itself, in much the same way as he rehearses the movements he will make across the stage during a performance. In the exhibition these paintings will be accompanied by more intimate pencil drawings and scroll like works in pencil and gouache on Japanese fold-out books, which describe driving through the chaotic urban environment of cities such as Tokyo and Miami.”

The Bernard Jacobson Gallery can be found at 6 Cork Street, London, W1S 3NX. What’s Going on in Your Head When You’re Dancing? will be free to enter and is open Monday to Friday from 10am – 6pm and Saturday 11am – 1pm.

To celebrate this, there will an art take over of Underworld Live for a week starting from today (June 15th 2012). Each day we’ll be uploading new and exclusive iPad drawings from Karl. In the shop, limited quantities of the art catalogue from Karl’s Tokyo exhibition will be available as well as Rick’s
‘Bungalow with Stairs’ LP, the soundtrack to said show.
